Simple Changes Part 2: Finding the Technology Balance

Unplugging from technology is no easy task but it may be in our best interest. It can be a challenge to step away from social media and live in the moment. In fact, too much time spent on the Internet can actually inhibit creativity and lead to stress. This past week, I was on vacation with my family and made a conscious decision to unplug for the week (school was the exception.)

As the week went on, it felt so nice to truly live in the moment and give the people I was with my undivided attention. A funny thing: the longer I went without checking social media, the less interested I became in checking it at all. Technology, like Twitter and Facebook, do have their benefits. It is nice to receive timely news updates or connect with friends from far away. However, in an effort to maintain balance without losing sight of the present moment, here are a few tips:

  • Choose a time to unplug for the night. – It can be easy to fall down the rabbit hole of Pinterest, but choosing a time to unplug for the night lets your mind relax before sleep.
  • Choose a few publications of print media for your news or topics of interest fix. – Use your free time to read a book from your list or immerse yourself in Boston Magazine. You will be surprised how refreshing it feels to read in print versus online.
  • Consider how many hours of the day are spent in front of a screen. – It may sound trite but calculating time spent in front of a screen can help you realize how important it is to use free time for more important things like connecting with a friend or exploring the outdoors.
  • Make a list of your goals. – What is something you wish you had more time for? Going for longer runs? Taking a photography class? Becoming a certified yoga instructor? Learning how to cook your mom’s tomato sauce? You have the time to achieve your goals so make a list and get after them!
